Background of the Study
Community resilience to drought has become a critical area of research as climate variability increasingly affects socio-economic stability in many regions (Adeyemi, 2023). In Ogbomosho North, recurrent drought conditions have exposed vulnerabilities in water supply systems, agricultural productivity, and community infrastructure. The interplay between traditional coping mechanisms and emerging modern adaptation strategies is at the forefront of current debates. Local communities, relying on indigenous knowledge and collective resource management, face challenges when confronted with prolonged periods of water scarcity (Ogunleye, 2024). Simultaneously, government initiatives and external aid programs strive to complement these traditional approaches. However, there is limited empirical research that evaluates the overall effectiveness of such interventions. This study explores the multi-dimensional aspects of community resilience by analyzing socio-economic impacts, adaptive capacities, and policy implications. It also examines how environmental, cultural, and technological factors converge to either enhance or undermine resilience in the face of climate-induced drought (Chukwu, 2023; Eze, 2024). Such an integrated approach is vital for formulating targeted interventions that support sustainable resource management and long-term community stability (Bamidele, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Ogbomosho North is increasingly vulnerable to recurrent droughts, which jeopardize agricultural output and water availability, thereby threatening community livelihoods (Okeke, 2023). Despite various indigenous and modern adaptation strategies, gaps remain in effectively coordinating these approaches to build long-term resilience. Inadequate governmental support and inconsistent policy implementation exacerbate the situation. This study seeks to pinpoint the deficiencies in current resilience measures and evaluate the interplay between traditional coping mechanisms and modern interventions, with the aim of proposing comprehensive strategies to enhance overall drought resilience in the region (Adeyemi, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To assess the current state of community resilience to drought in Ogbomosho North.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of indigenous and modern coping strategies.
3. To propose policy recommendations for improving drought resilience.
Research Questions:
1. What are the key factors influencing community resilience to drought in Ogbomosho North?
2. How effective are the current coping strategies in mitigating drought impacts?
3. What policy interventions can enhance community adaptation to drought?
Research Hypotheses:
1. There is a significant relationship between traditional coping strategies and community resilience to drought.
2. Modern adaptation techniques significantly improve water resource management during drought periods.
3. Enhanced government policies positively affect the community's capacity to manage drought impacts.
Significance of the Study
This study provides critical insights into the resilience mechanisms employed by communities in Ogbomosho North, guiding policymakers and stakeholders in developing targeted interventions. The findings are anticipated to improve resource management, enhance socio-economic stability, and contribute to sustainable development practices in drought-prone regions (Adeyemi, 2023; Ogunleye, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to assessing community resilience to drought in Ogbomosho North Local Government Area, focusing on indigenous and modern adaptation strategies and excluding broader climatic models.
Definitions of Terms:
1. Community Resilience: The capacity of a community to withstand and recover from adverse situations.
2. Drought: A prolonged period of deficient rainfall resulting in water scarcity.
3. Adaptation Strategies: Measures implemented to adjust to climatic changes and mitigate adverse effects.
